Why do people get pressure ulcers?
When people have health conditions that make it difficult for them to move they become at risk of pressure ulcers. This is especially the case for anyone who is confined to lying in a bed or sitting for prolonged periods of time. Pressure ulcers can form anywhere on the body, but contact areas that are not covered by a large amount of body fat are most vulnerable. This includes body parts such as shoulders, elbows, back of the head, ears, knees, ankles, heels or toes or spine. Most especially it includes those parts that are in contact with the bed or wheelchair.
Pressure ulcer prevention to fit the bill
There are compelling economic arguments for healthcare providers to invest in pressure ulcer prevention. Pressure ulcers dramatically increase the cost of each patient’s care bill, studies showing that each ulcer adds an additional £4,000 onto the overall care costs of a patient. Consequences for the patient include prolonged hospitalisation, pain, social isolation and in worst cases, death.
Greek military hospital tackles heel ulcers
